Australia is experiencing unprecedented brushfire activity. Ecologists at Sydney University have estimated over 1 billion animals in Australia have been affected since September.
The Australian Summer (American winter) is a frantically busy time for wildlife rescue and there are still over 100 fires burning in New South Wales. In December alone, volunteers with the Australian Wildlife Rescue Organization (WIRES) attended over 3,300 rescues.
WIRES has been rescuing and caring for wildlife for over 30 years and is the largest wildlife rescue organization in Australia. They operate rescue and care services for wildlife affected by the Australia fires, including koalas and kangaroos.
